Expanding Research Profiles to bridge the gaps: How WashU library staff are teaming up to expand WashU Medicine’s research information management system university wide
Monday May 19, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
Research Profiles is a publicly accessible and searchable knowledge base for exploring the expertise, interests, and publications of the faculty, departments, institutes, and centers at WashU Medicine. Since its launch in 2019, Research Profiles has served as a valuable resource for faculty, staff, students, administrators, leaders and external stakeholders to identify collaborators, mentors, and experts, and promote the visibility and impact of WashU Medicine research.

Beginning in 2025, Research Profiles will expand to include all full-time faculty at WashU as part of WashU’s Here and Next strategic plan. Expansion efforts will be carried out in collaboration by Becker Library and WashU Libraries with support and leadership from the Digital Intelligence and Innovation Accelerator and the Office of the Provost.

The panel serves as an opportunity for attendees to learn about an existing service at Becker Library and a new service at Olin Library.

Dissecting the Past: Attempting to Bring Medical History to the Curriculum
Monday May 19, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
In 2023, the Center for the History of Medicine at Becker Medical Library sponsored a spring break trip abroad for medical students interested in exploring the history of medicine. The primary reason for offering this experience was our belief that an understanding and appreciation of medical history is valuable for those who wish to pursue a career in medicine, and since there is no formal instruction in medical history offered within the framework of the medical school curriculum, we would create an extracurricular option. The first trip went to Italy to explore the birthplace of anatomical education in Europe, and the following year students went to the Netherlands to visit sites connected to the rise of the Netherlands as a site of medical preeminence in the 17th century. For its third year, the trip abroad is being integrated into a four-week elective, with three other sessions taking place within Becker Library’s rare books department. The hope is to grow this into a regular class offering that incorporates medical history into the curriculum while also raising awareness of Becker’s rare book collections, giving students the opportunity to explore the development of their chosen field. This talk will discuss the process of developing the trip, its challenges, and its outcomes.
